Untapped Potential: Strategies for Revitalization and Reuse

The Partnership for Building Reuse has released a new report highlighting strategies for reusing older vacant and underutilized buildings to revitalize neighborhoods. Based on the Partnership’s work in five cities, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, the report provides potential solutions to overcome the most common market, financial, technical and regulatory barriers impacting building reuse.

The Partnership’s process that included extensive stakeholder engagement and in-depth data analysis in all participating cities, made it clear that older buildings represent tremendous untapped development potential. By easing regulatory burdens such as off-street parking requirements, and taking a more flexible, performance-based approach towards meeting life-safety requirements, cities can incentivize reuse of older buildings transforming them into vibrant, active spaces.
