Untapped Potential: Strategies for Revitalization and Reuse

The Partnership for Building Reuse has released a new report highlighting strategies for reusing older vacant and underutilized buildings to revitalize neighborhoods. Based on the Partnership’s work in five cities, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, the report provides potential solutions to overcome the most common market, financial, technical and regulatory barriers impacting building reuse. Our work in the communities continued this summer as we, in partnership with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), conducted a Development Dialogue in Richmond, IL to help the Village leadership analyze and prioritize development opportunities. A new ULI report, Retail in Underserved Communities, explores factors that hamper retail development in some lower-income communities, offers solutions to overcome the dearth of shopping options for neighborhood residents, and includes case studies exploring how retail development sparked revitalization efforts.
