ULI Chicago Launches Initiative to Foster Successful Creation of Accessory Dwelling Units
November 12, 2019
ULI Chicago has launched an initiative to foster the successful creation of accessory dwelling units or ADUs, including basement/attic units and stand-alone or above-garage coach houses.
ULI Chicago is bringing together ULI members, partner organizations and community representatives to identify barriers—regulatory/policy, technical/design and financial—to building ADU housing stock in Chicago and to develop recommendations to overcome them. Our goal is to make it easier for owner occupants and smaller-scale developers to add legal ADUs to their 1-4 unit, or multi-family residential properties to increase the supply of dwelling units. Many types of ADUs, such as basement units, are likely to be more affordable, thereby increasing housing options for for lower- and middle-income households.
Through the collective effort of a diverse group of stakeholders, ULI Chicago’s ADU Initiative is creating the framework for a successful and equitable ADU program for the City of Chicago and a potential model for communities across the region. Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to get involved!
