ULI Chicago conducted two panels in 2013 in Winnetka addressing the Village’s commercial health, identifying retail opportunities, and outlining strategies for a stronger partnership between the Village, retailers and owners. One of the key recommendations of the panel process was to appoint an Economic Development Coordinator who could serve as a liaison for the local business community and work pro-actively to create a business-friendly environment in Winnetka. Based on this recommendation, the Village has recently hired Denise Dahl to fill this role.
The Village also completed many streetscape improvements recommended in the TAP report including repairs and upgrades to the Hubbard Woods Parking Deck to improve safety and usability.
Additionally, Winnetka is getting ready to undertake a comprehensive master planning process for its downtown that will address many of the TAP recommendations regarding issues such as building height and density, parking and the retail overlay district. The Village is expected to issue an RFP to consultants in the next few weeks.
